Hello, parents and guardians,
I hope you've been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather! Here's what's been going on in our classroom...
Reading: We've begun reading groups this week as we work on fluency and stamina as readers. We've been practicing tapping out words to sound them out when they're tricky.
Math: Currently we are working on subtraction facts and using word problems to create number bonds and number sentences.
Fundations: This week we learned about the "Bonus Letter" rule: when a word has a short vowel in the middle and ends in f, l, s, or z, the last letter is doubled. Ask your first grader to both tap out and spell words like "mess", "fill", "buzz", and "off."
Writing: Our current unit focuses on writing "how to" pieces. Students are practicing using transition words like "first", "next", "then", and "finally" to tell about something in sequence.
This week has started WIN, or What I Need. Students travel to different first grade classrooms in the late afternoon and work on math skills that are challenging for them, such as oral counting, numbers to 120, etc. The students have loved getting to know other first grade teachers and making new friends in other classrooms!
A Scholastic book order went home today. If you would like to place an order online my class code is RP2NR.
HALLOWEEN: On Halloween our class will be doing themed academic activities and a few games. Students may wear orange and black if they choose, however we will not be wearing costumes to school.
